Quark and the Xunta de Galicia sign an agreement for the design of a new data centre in Santiago de Compostela

Quark, an engineering and design company specialising in data centres, has this week signed the contract formalising the award of the design and project management of the new data centre for the Axencia para a Modernización Tecnolóxica de Galicia, a body belonging to the Xunta de Galicia.

The firm will be responsible for the drafting of the preliminary project and the basic project as well as the execution project. It will also be in charge of the activity project and the coordination, supervision and management of the project.

The construction will take place in the A Sionlla business park, east of Santiago de Compostela, on two plots of land totalling 9,170 square metres. Partly financed by European Next Generation funds, the centre will have a level of security that, in the words of the Xunta, will provide stability in the provision of critical public services, such as health and education. The infrastructure will double the storage capacity of the current CPD of Gaiás and will be sized to manage the increase in data of the entire autonomous public sector.

On a technical level, it should be noted that the installation will follow the criteria to be Tier IV certifiable by the Uptime Institute and must support 5kW/rack in medium-value IT rooms, being able to accept densities of 10kW/rack. It will also implement high-efficiency solutions to reach at least a PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) level of 1.4 and, additionally, the site will have to be thoroughly verified through a five-stage commissioning process.
